Vietnam: The Peaceful Country

Vietnam, officially the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, is the easternmost country on the Indochina Peninsula in Southeast Asia. With an estimated 90.5 million inhabitants as of 2014, it is the world's 13th-most-populous country, and the eighth-most-populous Asian country. The name Vietnam translates as "Southern Viet" (synonymous with the much older term Nam Viet); it was first officially adopted in 1802 by Emperor Gia Long, and was adopted again in 1945 with the founding of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam under Ho Chi Minh. The country is bordered by China to the north, Laos to the northwest, Cambodia to the southwest, and the South China Sea to the east. Its capital city has been Hanoi since the reunification of North and South Vietnam in 1976. The Currency is Dong (VND).

Some interesting facts are:

1. Vietnam is the largest exporter of cashews in the world, and the second largest exporter of rice.

2. Instead of bells, traditional gongs are used to call the Vietnamese children to school.

3. Although Vietnam is a developing country, it has a literacy rate of 94%.

4. Ruou ran (snake wine), a Vietnamese specialty of rice wine with a pickled snake inside, allegedly can cure any sickness.

5. The Vietnamese language has six different tones. A change in tone changes the meaning of the word. This makes their language somewhat difficult to learn.

6. Fan Si Pan is the highest mountain in Vietnam. It is located near Sapa. The mountain is 3150m (10300 ft) is high.

7. Vietnam has thirty national parks out of which Yok Dan national park located in the Dak Lac province is the largest.

8. The Pagoda is the place of worship where offerings are made and prayers are offered. It is otherwise called chua.

9. Tet Nguyen Dan is the ‘Festival of the First Day’.

10. It celebrates christmas, birthdays and New Year together. The whole nation celebrates turning a year older together.

11. The lizards caught are grilled, roasted or fried and served.
