Azerbaijan: The Land of Fire

Azerbaijan, officially the Republic of Azerbaijan, is a contiguous transcontinental presidential republic in the Caucasus region, situated at the crossroads of Eastern Europe and Western Asia. It is bounded by the Caspian Sea to the east, Russia to the north, Georgia to the northwest, Armenia to the west and Iran to the south. The exclave of Nakhchivan is bounded by Armenia to the north and east, Iran to the south and west, while having a short border with Turkey in the northwest.The Capital and largest city is Baku. The Currency is Manat (AZN).

Some interesting facts are:
1. Oily Rocks (Neft Dashlar) is the first and largest town on stilts to be constructed at sea. Situated in the Caspian Sea, the town was built in phases after 1947.

2. The first known fireplace and construction in human history, which is dated back from 700,000 to 500,000 years ago, was discovered in Azykh Cave, the largest cave in Azerbaijan.

3. Tea is the most popular drink in Azerbaijan. Traditionally served in a pear shaped glass, the drink is often consumed through lumps of sugar or jam, held in the mouth.

4. The Burning Mountain is a rare natural wonder in the Absheron peninsula. It burns all year round due to natural gas escaping from the ground.

5. The highest point in Azerbaijan is Bazarduzu Dagi, which is 4,485 m above the sea level.

6. It is believed that prophet Zoroaster, the founder of the Zoroastrian, was born in Azerbaijan, which was the part of the Persian Empire at that time.

7. The world’s first oil well was drilled near Baku. The well was drilled somewhere around the middle of the nineteenth century.

8. Azerbaijan is the first Muslim country to have operas and theater plays.

9. The Azerbaijan Constitution does not declare any religion as official to the country, but majority of people adhere to the Shia branch of Islam.

10. Nowruz is the oldest national holiday of Azerbaijan, which celebrates the New Year and the coming of spring.
