Syria: The Land of The First Murder

Syria, officially the Syrian Arab Republic, is a country in Western Asia, bordering Lebanon and the Mediterranean Sea to the west, Turkey to the north, Iraq to the east, Jordan to the south, and Israel to the southwest. Its capital Damascus is among the oldest continuously-inhabited cities in the world. A country of fertile plains, high mountains, and deserts, it is home to diverse ethnic and religious groups, including Arabs, Greeks, Armenians, Assyrians, Kurds, Circassians, Mhallami, Mandeans and Turks. Religious groups include Sunni, Christians, Alawite, Druze religion, Mandeanism and Yezidi. Sunni Arabs make up the largest population group in Syria. The capital is Damascus and largest city is Aleppo. The currency is Syrian Pound (SYP).

Some interesting facts are:
1. Geographically Syria is divided into two parts by the mountains.

2. Palmyra – is one of the most impressive and interesting ghost towns left over from the ancient period.

3. Hama – is a unique city in Syria. Hama is famous for its huge water-lifting wheels – ancient mechanism, which is still works.

4. About 90% of the Syrian population are Muslims (most of which – are Sunni) 10% – are Christians.

5. The earliest account of a mermaid is the story of the Syrian goddess Atargatis who became half-fish after accidentally killing a shepherd she loved.

6. The Golden (or Syrian) hamster was discovered in Aleppo, Syria, in 1930.

7. Syrian has some of the world’s most beautiful railway stations. Syria is a popular destination for Shia pilgrims from Iran.

8. In Syria, there is a very strict morals. Syrian women have no sex before marriage, otherwise nobody will marry such women.

9. The ancient legend said, that the world’s first murder occurred on the territory of modern Syria. It is here the biblical Cain killed his brother because of jealousy.

10. Syria does not recognize Israel. If in passport you have visa of Israel, then you can’t visit Syria.
