The United Arab Emirates: The 7 Trucial States

The United Arab Emirates, sometimes simply called the Emirates or the UAE, is a country located in the southeast end of the Arabian Peninsula on the Persian Gulf, bordering Oman to the east and Saudi Arabia to the south, as well as sharing sea borders with Qatar and Iran. In 2013, the UAE's total population was 9.2 million, of which 1.4 million are Emirati citizens and 7.8 million are expatriates. The capital is Abu Dhabi and largest city is Dubai. The currency is UAE dirham (AED).

Some interesting facts are:
1. The United Arab Emirates donated a laptop to every high school student in Joplin, Missouri, after the city had been devastated by a tornado.

2. There are ATMs in Dubai that dispense gold bars.

3. The iconic Chrysler Building in Manhattan is owned almost entirely by the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

4. Ferrari owns the largest indoor theme park in Abu Dhabi. Their rollercoaster, the Rosso, is the World’s fastest, reaching 150mph in 5 seconds.

5. A city is currently being built in Dubai that will rely entirely on solar energy and other renewable energy sources, with a sustainable, zero-carbon, zero-waste ecology.

6. One of Dubai’s more famous creations, The World Islands, are sinking back into the ocean.

7. The tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa, is in Dubai. It has 164 floors.

8. The above ground metro station opened in Dubai 2009. It consists of 42 stations and was built in just 18 months. The Dubai Metro is the world's first driverless metro rail network and has the world's longest fully automated metro network with a route length of 75 kilometres.

9. Dubai asked Disneyland to consider building a resort here and Disneyland turned them down, saying Dubai was too small. So Dubai decided to construct its own theme park called Dubailand.

10. The most luxurious hotel in the world is in Dubai and it’s called the Burj Al Arab. It bills itself at a 7-star hotel and is build on a man-island just off the coast.

11. Indians are the largest expatriate group, and they mostly hail from the southern states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

12. Sharjah was the first to establish an airport in the Gulf region.

13. The Palm islands and The World, in Dubai are among the largest man-made islands in the world. These islands added nearly 500 kms to Dubai's coastline.

14. The Shiekh Zayed Grand Masjid in Abu Dhabi is the one of the largest masjid in the world which houses the world's third largest chandelier and the world's largest carpet made in Iran. The chandelier is the world's second second largest chandelier inside a masjid. to The masjid can accommodate over 40,000 people.

15. Princess Tower, Dubai, is the world's tallest residential building (101 floors).  Dubai marina is the tallest block of skyscrapers in the world. It is home to seven of the ten tallest residential buildings in the world.

16. The Dubai Mall is the world's largest mall by total area. It houses the world's second largest aquarium, world’s largest acrylic panel and world's largest sweet shop.
